Investigating Treadmill Accidents and Claims of Product Defects

Peloton recalled its Tread + and Tread treadmills following a request by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Nearly 125,000 treadmills are included in the recall after the CPSC reported one child death and 70 other injuries tied to the treadmills.

Treadmills continue to be one of the major causes of liability claims in the health club industry. Accidents involving treadmills at home are causing an increasing number of injuries. Two-thirds of all home gym equipment accidents occur on treadmills and over 2,000 treadmill accidents require trips to the emergency room. Injuries can happen to children and adults alike due to several factors: design flaws, manufacturing defects, faulty installation, and improper use.

Treadmills, like any other moving piece of equipment, can be dangerous if the warning and safety precautions are not followed. Our engineers have investigated treadmill accidents that involve improper installation, human factors, and product defects.
